UK motorway with toll gantry and cars

Unlike most of Europe, the UK operates a small number of specific toll roads, bridges, and tunnels rather than a nationwide motorway toll system. This guide covers every UK toll point — current 2026 prices, how to pay, what happens if you don't, and how to save money on every crossing.

Dartford Crossing (Dart Charge)

The Dartford Crossing is the UK's busiest toll point — over 50,000 vehicles cross each day. It connects Kent in the south with Essex in the north via the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge (southbound) and two tunnels (northbound). There are no toll booths: every vehicle is recorded by cameras and you pay online.

Class C — Vans, motorhomes 3.5–18t, coaches£3.00£3.00
Class D — HGVs over 18t£6.00£6.00

Cars towing caravans or trailers are charged as Class C (£3.00), not Class B.

How to Pay Dartford Crossing

You must pay by midnight the day after you cross. There are three ways:

  • Online: gov.uk/dart-charge — enter your vehicle registration and pay by card
  • Phone: 0300 300 0120 (24/7)
  • PayPoint: In-store at newsagents, supermarkets — look for the PayPoint sign
  • Pre-pay account: Set up at dart-charge.service.gov.uk — balance deducted automatically each crossing. Avoids risk of forgetting

⚠️ Dartford Penalty Charge Notice

Failing to pay results in a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN) of £70, reduced to £35 if paid within 14 days. Ignoring a PCN leads to a charge certificate (£105) and potential court action. You can receive a PCN even if you crossed legally and simply forgot to pay — always set up a pre-pay account if you cross regularly.

Dartford Crossing Exemptions

  • Vehicles registered as VED class 'Disabled' (zero road tax due to disability) are automatically exempt — DVLA database is checked
  • Emergency service vehicles (police, fire, ambulance)
  • Vehicles owned by Highways England
  • Vehicles travelling between 10pm–6am have no toll — the crossing is free overnight

Note: The overnight free period (10pm–6am) is a longstanding feature of the Dartford Crossing — planning your journey outside peak hours saves £2.50 per crossing for regular users.

M6 Toll — Birmingham Motorway Bypass

The M6 Toll is the UK's only toll motorway. The 27-mile route runs from just north of Cannock (junction with M6 J11A) to the M6/M42 interchange near Coleshill (J4A). It was opened in 2003 as a private venture to relieve chronic congestion on the M6 through Birmingham — one of the most congested stretches of motorway in Europe.

M6 Toll Prices 2026

Vehicle ClassPeak (Mon–Fri 7–9am, 4–7pm)Off-peak
Class A — Motorcycles£3.70£3.15
Class B — Cars, 4x4s, campervans under 3.5t£7.40£6.30
Class B + trailer (car + caravan/trailer)£11.40£9.70
Class C — 2-axle HGV/coach£14.80£12.60

How to Pay M6 Toll

Unlike Dartford, the M6 Toll still has staffed toll plazas with lanes. Payment options:

  • Card: Debit and credit cards accepted at all lanes
  • Cash: Cash accepted at staffed lanes (not all lanes)
  • T-Flow tag: Electronic tag for frequent users — prepaid account, no stopping at booth. Monthly statements for business users
  • Dart Charge/Fasttrack tag: Some toll tags from other networks are not accepted — only T-Flow is accepted at M6 Toll

Is the M6 Toll Worth It?

The M6 through Birmingham carries around 180,000 vehicles per day and is frequently at standstill during rush hour. At peak times, using the M6 Toll instead of the free M6 typically saves:

Time of DayM6 (free) Typical DelayM6 Toll Typical JourneyTime Saved
Weekday peak (7–9am)45–90 min delay~25 min20–65 min
Weekday off-peak (10am–3pm)0–15 min delay~25 minMinimal benefit
Weekend0–30 min delay~25 minVariable

For professional drivers, the hourly value of time usually justifies the toll at peak times. For leisure travellers, it depends on schedule pressure.

Mersey Gateway and Silver Jubilee Bridge

The Mersey Gateway opened in 2017 and replaced the Silver Jubilee Bridge as the main crossing between Runcorn and Widnes. Both bridges are now part of the same tolled crossing system — you can use either, and both charge the same price. The toll is entirely cashless: cameras read your numberplate and you pay online.

Mersey Gateway Prices 2026

Vehicle TypeStandard (pay-as-you-go)Account holder
Car£2.10£2.10
Van / light goods£4.20£4.20
HGV 2 axle£6.30£6.30

Local residents of Halton borough can register for discounted crossing rates. Blue Badge holders can register for a free crossing scheme (one-off £5 registration fee). See our Blue Badge guide for details.

Payment must be made by midnight on the day of crossing. Pay at merseygateway.co.uk or by phone on 0151 523 2233.

Humber Bridge

The Humber Bridge links Hull in the East Riding of Yorkshire with Lincolnshire. When it opened in 1981 it was the longest single-span suspension bridge in the world (a record it held until 1998). Tolls are charged only eastbound (Hull to Lincolnshire) — westbound (Lincolnshire to Hull) is free.

VehicleEastbound tollWestbound
Car£1.50Free
Car + caravan/trailer£3.00Free
Van (2 axle)£5.00Free
HGV (2 axle)£11.50Free

Payment is made at toll booths — cash and card accepted. A pre-pay smart card (Humber Bridge Quick Pass) is available for frequent users and offers the same rate but faster throughput.

Tyne Tunnels

The Tyne Tunnels consist of two parallel road tunnels carrying the A19 under the River Tyne between Jarrow and Howdon in Newcastle. The original western tunnel opened in 1967; the second tunnel opened in 2011. The tunnels are fully cashless — cameras read your plate and you pay online.

Cars pay £2.00 per crossing. Pay at tynetunnel.co.uk or set up a FastTag account for automatic payment and to qualify for discounted multi-trip packages (e.g. 20 crossings for £30). Blue Badge holders who are VED-exempt can register for free crossings.

Severn Crossings — Now Free

The two Severn Crossings — the original Severn Bridge (M48) and the Prince of Wales Bridge (M4, formerly the Second Severn Crossing) — were toll-free from 17 December 2018 after the debt on the privately-financed bridge was repaid. This was a significant saving: cars previously paid £6.70 westbound (England to Wales). Today there is no charge in either direction on either crossing.

London Congestion Charge and ULEZ

London's two main city-centre charges are not toll roads in the traditional sense, but they function similarly for drivers:

ChargeCostHoursArea
Congestion Charge£15/dayMon–Fri 7am–6pm, Sat–Sun 12–6pmCentral London zone (CCZ)
ULEZ£12.50/day24 hours, 7 days a weekAll London boroughs

Both are operated by Transport for London (TfL) and are paid at tfl.gov.uk. See our full London driving guide for detailed advice on navigating both charges.

What Happens if You Don't Pay?

For cashless tolls (Dartford, Mersey Gateway, Tyne Tunnel), cameras read your number plate automatically. If no payment is registered, a Penalty Charge Notice is issued to the registered keeper. Standard penalties:

TollPCN AmountReduced if paid within 14 days
Dartford Crossing£70£35
Mersey Gateway£60£30
Tyne Tunnel£60£30

PCNs escalate if not paid. A charge certificate is typically issued 28 days after the PCN, increasing the amount by 50%. Persistent non-payment can lead to a debt collection order and bailiff action.

Money-Saving Tips

  1. Set up pre-pay accounts for tolls you use regularly — eliminates risk of PCNs and speeds up payment
  2. Travel Dartford Crossing between 10pm and 6am — the crossing is free overnight
  3. Use the M6 Toll off-peak — save £1.10 per journey by avoiding peak charging windows
  4. Humber Bridge: approach from Lincolnshire side — westbound is free; only eastbound is charged
  5. Register for local resident discounts — Mersey Gateway has discounted rates for Halton residents
  6. Blue Badge holders: register in advance — most toll roads offer free or discounted crossings for disabled drivers
  7. Use our toll calculator to compare toll vs. fuel cost of alternative routes before you travel

Frequently Asked Questions

How many toll roads are there in the UK?

Around 20 toll roads, bridges, and tunnels. The main ones are Dartford Crossing, M6 Toll, Mersey Gateway, Silver Jubilee Bridge, Humber Bridge, Tyne Tunnels, Tamar Bridge, and Itchen Bridge. The Severn Crossings became toll-free in December 2018.

Do I have to pay Dartford Crossing in advance?

You must pay by midnight the day after you cross — online at gov.uk/dart-charge, by phone (0300 300 0120), or at a PayPoint store. There are no toll booths. A pre-pay account deducts automatically on each crossing and is the safest option for regular users. Not paying results in a £70 PCN (reduced to £35 within 14 days).

Is the M6 Toll worth it?

At peak times (weekday rush hours), yes — the M6 through Birmingham can add 30–90 minutes. At £7.40 for cars, the time saving is usually worth it. Off-peak and at weekends, the free M6 is often clear enough that the toll isn't needed. Check live traffic before deciding.

Are toll roads free for electric vehicles?

No. In 2026, most UK toll roads charge EVs the same as petrol/diesel cars. EVs are exempt from Clean Air Zone charges and London ULEZ, but standard road tolls (Dartford £2.50, M6 Toll £7.40 etc.) apply to all vehicles. VED-exempt disabled vehicles may qualify for free crossings at some tolls.
