Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about UK tolls, congestion charges, and driving in Britain

🛣️ UK Toll Roads

What toll roads are there in the UK?

The main toll roads in the UK are the M6 Toll (Birmingham bypass), Dartford Crossing (Kent-Essex), Mersey Tunnels (Liverpool), Humber Bridge, Tyne Tunnels, and several smaller bridges. Unlike most European countries, the UK doesn't have a nationwide motorway toll system.

How much does the M6 Toll cost?

The M6 Toll costs £7.10 for cars during peak times (Mon-Fri 6am-8pm) and £6.00 during off-peak. Vans and HGVs pay £14.20 (peak) or £12.00 (off-peak). Weekend rates are lower.

How much is the Dartford Crossing?

The Dartford Crossing (Dart Charge) costs £2.50 for cars, £3.00 for vans, and £6.00 for HGVs. You must pay online or by phone by midnight the day after crossing. There are no toll booths.

Can I pay with cash at UK toll roads?

It depends on the toll. The M6 Toll accepts cash, card, and contactless at toll booths. However, the Dartford Crossing is completely cashless - you must pay online at gov.uk/pay-dartford-crossing-charge or by phone.

What happens if I don't pay a toll?

Failure to pay results in a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN). For Dart Charge, the fine is £70 (reduced to £35 if paid within 14 days). For other tolls, fines vary but can be up to £120.

💳 Dart Charge & Tags

How do I pay the Dart Charge?

You can pay online at gov.uk/pay-dartford-crossing-charge, by phone on 0300 300 0120, or by setting up a Dart Charge account for automatic payments. You must pay by midnight the day after you cross.

What is a Dart Charge account?

A Dart Charge account lets you pre-pay for crossings. Benefits include discounted rates (£2.00 instead of £2.50 for cars), automatic payments, and no need to remember to pay each time. You link your vehicle registration to the account.

Can I pay Dart Charge in advance?

Yes! You can pay up to 12 hours before your crossing and up to midnight the day after. If you're a regular user, a Dart Charge account with auto top-up is the easiest option.

What toll tags work in the UK?

For the M6 Toll, you can get an M6tag for faster passage. The Dartford Crossing uses automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) linked to your Dart Charge account - no physical tag needed.

🏙️ Congestion Charges

What is the London Congestion Charge?

The London Congestion Charge is a daily fee of £15 to drive in central London between 7am-6pm on weekdays and 12pm-6pm on weekends. The zone is marked with red 'C' symbols on signs.

What is ULEZ?

ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) covers all London boroughs. Vehicles that don't meet emission standards (generally pre-2015 petrol, pre-2015 diesel) must pay £12.50 per day, 24/7. Check your vehicle at tfl.gov.uk/ulez.

Are there congestion charges outside London?

Currently, Durham has a small congestion charge zone (£2). Several UK cities have Clean Air Zones (CAZ) where older, more polluting vehicles must pay, including Birmingham, Bath, and Bristol.

How do I pay the Congestion Charge?

Pay online at tfl.gov.uk/modes/driving/congestion-charge, via the TfL Pay to Drive app, or by phone. You can pay in advance, on the day, or until midnight the following day (with a late fee).

🚗 Driving in the UK

What side of the road do you drive on in the UK?

In the UK, you drive on the left side of the road. This means the steering wheel is on the right side of the car. Take extra care at roundabouts and junctions when adjusting.

What are UK speed limits?

The national speed limit is 70 mph on motorways and dual carriageways, 60 mph on single carriageways, and 30 mph in built-up areas with street lights. Always look for signs as limits may be different.

Do I need an International Driving Permit (IDP)?

EU/EEA licence holders can drive in the UK without an IDP. Visitors from most other countries (including USA, Canada, Australia) can use their licence for up to 12 months without an IDP, but carrying one is recommended.

What is a smart motorway?

Smart motorways use technology to manage traffic flow. The hard shoulder may be converted to a running lane (shown by overhead signs). A Red X means the lane is closed - you must not drive in it. Use Emergency Refuge Areas for breakdowns.
